FOSTER PARENT COMMENTS: Vail is a wonderful dog, who will bring tons of joy and kisses to his lucky forever family. Vail loves all kinds of chew toys, playing with his foster sister, and cuddling as much as possible with his people. He is a “Velcro” dog, who would like to keep you in his sights at all times and follow you around the house. He has a very sweet disposition and though timid, is eager to please his humans. Once he “knows” his humans, he sticks to them like glue! He is great with both men and women, and loves kids! He is crate trained and housebroken. When Vail was first brought into his foster home, he was pretty much scared of everything and would rarely venture out of his crate on his own. Gradually, he became comfortable leaving his crate, but he still spent most of his time in one room of the house. Now, he follows his foster mom and dad everywhere within the house and is happy to go outside in the yard. He will even occasionally follow his foster sister in chasing a ball. He has made tremendous growth in his confidence, and will continue to grow with a patient and loving family. Life as a “tripod”: Sadly, Vail was hit by a car as a young puppy, before he was rescued by BFPA. The injuries to one of his back legs were substantial, and by the time BFPA was able to rescue him, the only option for him was to amputate the injured leg. He had surgery on January 23, and has recovered beautifully since. He is fully mobile on his own and has adjusted so well. His only limitations are that he sometimes struggles with stairs and hardwood floors. If his forever family has tile or hardwoods, it would be best if they are willing to put down some area rugs in their home so that he can get around without slipping. In addition, he occasionally needs to be carried down the stairs (he’s good at getting upstairs, but down is still a challenge). So, at least one member of Vail’s new family should be able to carry up to 45 lbs up/down one flight of stairs if your home includes many stairs. If he only has a few steps to go down, a ramp would be great for him. Although not required, a fenced yard will make life easier for Vail and his foster family. When he was first rescued, Vail was terrified to be outside. His foster mom says that once he found out how good life was inside a house, he never wanted to leave! He is now comfortable going outside in the backyard on his own, but he is still very scared to leave his own yard. His foster is working with him on going outside on leash walks, and she firmly believes he will be able to go on leash walks soon, but this will just take some more time. In the meantime, it would be easier for “bathroom” purposes if Vail still had a yard to go relieve himself in. He enjoys playing with his foster sister, but he would likely do well in a home where he can be the center of attention as well. If he is adopted to a family with other dogs, it’s important that the other dogs are either smaller than Vail or are able to play more gently with him given that he isn’t as stable on his feet as other dogs. He should remain on a high quality joint supplement. As you can see by the video, Vail is a fun loving dog and is making the most of being a three-legged dog. He has recovered wonderfully, is gaining confidence and wants a forever home so he can continue to enjoy life and be even more confident. EVERY DOG HAS A STORY: Vail was living outdoors with his siblings in frigid temperatures. BFPA was alerted to this situation and were allowed to bring these pups into our rescue. Vail is now in a warm, loving him and looking for his forever home. Can he come and snuggle with you?
