FOSTER PARENT COMMENTS:

Is your dog friendly or timid? Bea is very friendly with humans of all ages.

Does your dog get along with other dogs? Bea gets along well with our dog and with all large and small breed dogs she meets on walks.

How does your dog do with cats? We have not yet encountered cats so I’m unsure of this. She could be cat tested if necessary.

Has your dog been around children and if so, how did it go? Bea is very friendly and playful around our middle school children and their friends. She has also met smaller children on our walks and she’s very gentle and friendly with them.

Is your dog vocal or quiet?  I’ve only heard Bea bark a couple of times. She will whine/cry occasionally for your attention.

Is your foster dog housebroken?  She is mostly housebroken. She’s working very hard on this! She may never have been an indoor dog before so all this is new to her.

How long can your dog be left without having to go outside to do “their business”?  She can be left in the crate for 8-9 hours with no accidents.

Describe your dogs activity level….low, moderate or high energy?  Moderate – could decrease to low after she settles into her permanent home. She is playful and will bounce around playing with toys. Mostly her curiosity keeps her pacing and sniffing around the house.

Do you think your dog needs a fenced in yard or it this just a “nice to have” feature? A fenced yard would be nice for Bea. She is more comfortable doing her business off leash at this time. And she enjoys exploring outdoors.

Are you crate training your dog and if so, how does the dog react?  Bea is very comfortable in her crate. She’s crated during the day while we’re at school and work and she sleeps quietly in her crate through the night.

Are you leash walking your dog?  If so, how is that going? Bea does well walking on the leash. She doesn’t pull much and she keeps a nice, nose-to-the-ground pace! Odd thing is, she doesn’t seem comfortable doing her business on leash. We’re working on this!

What are some of your fosters favorite things to do?  Bea loves to go on walks, explore in the back yard, snuggle, play with squeaky toys, chew antlers and nylabones.

Do you think your dog could be an only dog?  I think Bea would be fine as an only dog.

Could your foster live in an apartment…..quiet enough and could live w/o a yard of their own?  She could probably get used to apartment life. She doesn’t really bark so she would certainly be quiet enough. I don’t yet know her backstory but I would guess that she’s always been an outdoor dog, possibly caged since she is so comfortable in the crate. We’re working on house manners (not begging for food, jumping up on counters/tables) and basic commands.

Does your dog know any basic commands…sit, stay, come?  Bea is getting better at coming when she’s called. We’re working on the sit, touch, look commands.

Why should someone adopt your dog, what are his/her strong points?  Bea is a very sweet, gentle, loving girl. She is fun to walk on leash. Hounds are known for being a little lazy but she’s very playful and quite entertaining when she wants to be.

Please provide any other comments which will be helpful for a potential adopter to know.

Bea is an adorable, sweet, gentle and very curious gal! She adores people and other dogs. She has a few scars that indicate a rough beginning for her. It’s heartbreaking to think that she has been treated poorly and likely just ignored, forced to fend for herself, prior to now. She is beginning to thrive with a regular routine. She still cries with joy when we come home… who doesn’t want to come to that every day? She so deserves to live to rest of her sweet life being showered with love.

Bea is heart worm positive and is being treated for this condition. When she can begin a trial adoption will depend upon her treatment schedule.  BFPA pays for all cost associated with this treatment and once Bea has been treated, she will have no long term effects of this condition.  This is a common condition for dogs who have been strays or not given proper care by their owners.  So sad....

A huge "thank you" to RADAR for helping assist BFPA with the financial costs for Bea. Raising Aid for Dogs At Risk will pay for her heartworm treatment!  We love RADAR and all the help they provide to dogs in need.

EVERY DOG HAS A STORY: Bea was rescued from a rural, coastal shelter before Hurricane Florence devastated NC.  Bea's life was saved and she is now looking for her forever home so she can  continue the great life she now has in a loving foster home.

Applicants must live no further than one hour from Cary NC as our dogs must be seen by a BFPA veterinarian for all medical care prior to adoptions being finalized.  Our foster guardians deliver dogs to their new homes for adoption trials and we do home visits to finalize all adoptions.  We therefore require applicants to live within an hours drive of Cary NC.
