FOSTER PARENT COMMENTS: Riley is a gorgeous adult Maltese/Poodle mix boy. He is 10 years old but you would never know it (check out his video).  He is very friendly and alert - if you get within a few feet of him he will roll over for a belly rub. Riley gets along well with most dogs - on limited occasions he has shown that he did not want to interact with a dog with the absence of his usual tail wag and a growl without aggression. He has not been around cats during his time with us. He has had some limited experience with children and has done well with respectful kids. Children should understand boundaries and read dog's cues before interacting with any dog.

Riley is a quiet boy. He is completely housebroken and does not have accidents. He has been left up to 8 hours during the day and can go all night without any issues. He has started to work on his crate training and making good progress. Riley does experience some separation anxiety so his foster family gives him some trazedone when he has to be left alone to help him. He is showing more and more improvement on as he is getting used to his foster home and their schedule. At night he sleeps in his foster's bed but he would also enjoy a warm and snuggly dog bed. He is working on his basic commands and knows sit and will come when called.

Riley has a low to moderate energy level. He loves his walks but is just as happy laying on something soft with his feet in the air. A fenced in yard would be a nice to have feature for this boy but it is not a must. He does like to sit outside and watch what's going on. He is leash trained and does well on a leash. He gets to go on multiple walks each day; he does not pull and is always happy for his walk. Riley could be an only dog; however without a dog companion he would benefit from an owner who is home frequently. He would be a very appropriate apartment dog due to his quiet nature and adult age.

Riley loves his belly rubs and relaxing on anything soft (even a towel on the floor). He walks on his hind legs when he gets excited. Riley loves to be close to his humans and is always interested in what's going on. He is a sweetheart of a dog and very content and calm being around people. He would love to have someone who is available a lot to be his companion. He also likes to be brushed and does not shed. He would be the perfect dog for someone who is home a lot. Riley will be a loving and loyal companion.

If you are interested in adopting Riley, please note that he has an appointment in March at the NCSU vet school Cardiology department to see whether he needs to be on heart medicine. So his adoption would not be finalized until after this appointment.  During this time, BFPA covers all expenses including his monthly flea/tick control and heartworm preventatives.

EVERY DOG HAS A STORY: Riley's owner passed away suddenly and this boy found himself without a home. A kind family member asked BFPA to take Riley in and we were more than happy to commit to finding this sweet boy his new forever family.

Some of the information contained in this biography includes approximations based on our expertise and is not guaranteed. Applicants must live no further than one hour from Cary NC as our dogs must be seen by a BFPA veterinarian for all medical care prior to adoptions being finalized.  Our foster guardians deliver dogs to their new homes for adoption trials and we do home visits to finalize all adoptions.  We therefore require applicants to live within an hours drive of Cary NC.
