FOSTER COMMENTS:

Vardy is a happy and friendly 18 mo old boxer mix, he weighs around 55lbs.  He was timid when we first got him out of the shelter - that was hardly surprising since he had been found on the streets a week earlier with his leg shattered and just hanging on..we don't know how long he had endured this. He came to us scared, broken and sad. Once he had the leg amputated he quickly acclimated and his friendly, fun personality blossomed.

Vardy lives with 4 other dogs and 2 cats in his foster home, he gets along with them all and is respectful.  We do think he will need careful introduction to other dogs as he has only known our dogs for the last 4 months or so due to the amputation, neuter and Heartworm treatment he has had to recover from. Vardy is a gentle dog and quiet for the most part. However, he is young and does have his silly moments!  He is easily corrected.

Vardy is like any typical young dog who has energy and loves to go for walks. However, as he only has 3 legs now, we limit his exercise to around a half mile.  We think he would benefit from a large flat yard  in his forever home, that he can play and run around in.  We do think his yard has to be fenced .. he has strong prey drive towards deer, squirrels and rabbits and he pulls hard when he sees them and would chase despite his disability.

We have been working from home for the entire time Vardy has lived with us. He goes out 4 - 5 times a day. He does let you know when he needs to go potty.  He walks well on leash but he is strong particularly if he sees a squirrel!

Vardy is house trained and crate trained. He  LOVES the crate and runs in at feed time!  Because we have so many dogs, we always feed him in his crate so he's super happy to be in there!  We have a separate crate in our bedroom and Vardy sleeps quietly through the night in there.  He really LOVES toys too! However, he is a strong chewer and we found that Westpaw are a great choice for him as they are fairly indestructible!

We have worked on basic training with him and he knows sit and come .. he is smart and really wants to please. He would love someone to work on more fun things with him.  Vardy has bonded with us and he would really love to have a stay at home owner which would be the best thing ever!  If not, then he absolutely needs another dog in his forever home.

We named him Vardy because his name means 'a mild mannered person who is the best friend you could ever have'. He really lives up to his name perfectly!  He is loyal and lovable, fun and happy .. if you are looking for a dog with a difference and with a heart of gold - then Vardy is your man!

Applicants must live a reasonable distance from Cary NC as our dogs must be seen by a BFPA veterinarian for all medical care prior to adoptions being finalized.  Our foster guardians deliver dogs to their new homes for adoption trials and we do home visits to finalize all adoptions.  We therefore prefer applicants that live within an hours drive of Cary NC.
